How to add custom input fields to checkout

I'm struggling to find a way to add some extra input fields to the checkout pages.
I want customers to enter additional comments to the order and a prefered delivery date.

This seems pretty basic functionality which is missing ?

You can simply do that by overriding customer-info.blade.php which you can find under shop->resources->views->checkout->onepage.
