What is the purpose of the position field in categories?

Hi friends, I have tried to understand but I cannot locate the logic behind the position in categories. I know that this is used to create the menu, but how should these positions be used, say for parent categories, child categories, and subcategories?

These positions help you to manage and maintain the sort order of your sub-categories for the front end.

It will help you to position where your sub-category will become visible.
